Going Out - Moodymann at Max's La Cheetah

Someone who needs no introduction is Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr), who plays Max's La Cheetah Club tonight in Glasgow (Friday 7th Match). An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned.

Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s.

His new album entitled 'Moodymann" just dropped recently, and is gathering rave reviews. This is a rare chance to catch him, as you probably won't see Moodymann in a more intimate environment anywhere else in the world. Needless to say this is going to be some next level business from one of the Motor City's most iconic figures!

Pre-sale tickets are now sold out. 70 tickets will be held for the door on the night. We advise you get down early if you wanna secure your place! Doors at 11.

Going Out - On The Quiet with The Revenge & Ali Ooft at Max's La Cheetah

New club night On The Quiet makes it's debut tonight (Saturday 15th Feb) at Max's La Cheetah Club on Queens St in Glasgow, and brings along The Revenge (Roar Groove) and Ali Ooft (Foto Recordings) to kick things off alongside residents Craig Moog and Kev Stevens.

As one half of the 6th Borough Project, Graeme Clark aka The Revenge is a producer who understands the past but embraces the future. The analogue approach, forward thinking productions and his versatility as a DJ, has ensured him a place as one of the leading names in House music in recent years.

The main force behind OOFT Music is Ali Herron. Originally cutting his production chops with tracky edits and some early OOFT! remixes alongside The Revenge, Ali has been steadily building up his own studio over the last 5 years, putting out a series of deep, pitched-down house tracks on labels such as Instruments of Rapture, PPF, Delusions of Grandeur, Rememory,Wolf Music and his own Foto Recordings label.

This is a night not to be missed and in the spirit of getting things moving on the right foot it is a FREE party, so no excuses not to attend!

Going Out - Optimo "Dark Was The Night" Release Party At The Sub Club

To celebrate the release of Optimo's great new "Dark Was The Night" mix album the duo are returning to the Sub Club tonight (Friday 31st Jan) for their first residency date of 2014.

Though Jonnie Wilkes and Keith McIvor have done scores of commercial and free mixes down the years, Dark Was The Night rivals any of their previous selections in terms of diversity. Across 21 tracks, the techno of Terrence Dixon and Silent Servant mingles with Scottish '70s punk band The Freeze, New York minimal wavers Jeff & Jayne Hudson, Kode9 & Space Ape's new-school dub and experimental cuts from the likes of Nurse With Wound, Hieroglyphic Being and Carter Tutti.

The title of the mix is a nod to Blind Willie Johnson, whose song "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground" was one of the 27 pieces of music taken on the Voyager space flight in 1977 (known collectively as the Voyager Golden Records). Despite this, Johnson died penniless of malaria fever decades before his music travelled into space: "a moving tale" that inspired both Wilkes and McIvor.

This looks set to be a great release party for an even greater mix, get yourself down to the Sub Club in Glasgow tonight tonight see what it's all about!

Going Out - Dixon Avenue Basement Jams at The Sub Club

One of our favourite labels and one of the best labels around right now has to be Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. It's great to see the guy's behind it Kenny and Dan take to Subculture at Glasgow's Sub Club tomorrow night (Saturday 25th Jan) for what looks set to be an outstanding night of music.

Based out of Glasgow, the motto for the labels is “real rockin’ raw shit from the street for the clubs”, and it sums up the imprint to date perfectly. Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, quite frankly, release weird, non standard machine music that spits and splurts, blurts and bleats all kinds of alien patterns, hooks and melodies into your ears and has done with every single one of its EP's so far.

Despite belying any one easy genre classification, never is the music too weird, alien or off the wall to not be hugely likeable – there is often a moment of serene synth calm, a catchy vocal clip or soulful detroit reflection hidden within the rawness of EPs from Marquis Hawkes, odd and Jarred Wilson.
Each one comes pressed on coloured vinyl, with the hand-stamped dog face logo and a print out of the tracklist. If you haven't heard any of these we advise you to check them out fast, or even better get youself down to the Sub Club tomorrow night to see what it's all about! Keep up the good work guys!

Going Out - Million Dollar Disco at The Berkeley Suite

Million Dollar Disco return to Glasgow this Saturday night (18th January) almost a year to the day since their last party there. To say they're excited is a bit of an understatement, anyone who was there last January is sure to understand why. All this in the intimate surrounding of one of Glasgow's best club spaces, The Berkeley Suite.

Al Kent was born in Scotland. His father was an avid record collector and had a cabinet full of them. And Whisky. Everything from Abba and Elvis to the Glitter Band and Buddy Holly was in there. What a load of shit they were.
In 1976 Al ran away from home to live in New York. Here, at the age of 8 he started attending the Loft and hanging out with Nicky Siano and a whole bunch of cool New York DJs with Italian names. In 1978 he was arrested for possession of PCP while guesting at Better Days with Tee Scott and deported back to Glasgow, where his dad was now getting into a bit more David Essex. He was shit too.
So Al opened.his own club in Glasgow, based on his experiences in New York. With his pocket money he flew Richard Long over to kit it out and had Walter Gibbons DJ at the opening party.
since then he's bought lots of records, done the deejaying in lots of places, and recorded an orchestra too.
For the full story of The Million Dollar Orchestra see the biography, in short the album was recorded in the traditional way, mostly one take, in an analogue studio. The Sound is rich , lush, string laden, beautiful disco music, full of joy with phenomenal musicianship. It is Al Kent’s biography told in Music. Al is currently working with Lynn from Ebonycuts on a time machine. This project should be completed soon, at which point the two will travel back in time and buy lots of records.

Once again Al Kent will be playing a full four hour set and we have some lovely MDD mix CDs, previously only available in Japan to give away if you get down early.

Mega Yacht 'Guilty' Designed By Jeff Koons

If your ever thinking of sailing the high sea's, and had the money to do it in style, then this new mega yacht designed by Italian yacht designer Ivana Porfiri and Jeff Koons looks just the way to do it. Greek Cypriot industrialist and art collector Dakis Joannou recently commissioned the yacht. A floating piece of art, 'Guilty' measures in at 115 feet long and ranks as Koons’ largest project to date. Inspired by British naval camouflage from World War I, the yacht’s exterior features bold geometric designs that include alternating yellow rhombuses, pink triangles and blue polygons.

The yacht’s interior walls and ceilings are all white, with extremely large windows to maximize natural lighting. Highlighting the space, a central staircase turns from pinkish violet to galactic blue and finally warm yellow. The main cabin encompasses the top deck, with 180-degree views and the word “Feelings” hanging in neon lights above the bed, the master bedroom also has a private terrace. The four guest cabins feature “museum-worthy” works, while the living room is decorated with Italian Radical Design furniture. You can check out some pics below.
