Nike Giving Something Back

Nike show us once again why they are one of our favourite brands over here at Fat Buddha Store. In a run down area of the lower east side in New York at the city's Masaryk Housing Towers project, Nike basketball has built a gym for the area. As part of their reclamation project Nike installed a brand new locker room, regulation full basketball court and even a scoreboard. The gym is ran as a private club right now, a select choice of pros and local New Yorkers are only allowed in right now but come April residents of Masaryk Tower's will take over the gym and make it their own. Amazing to see brands like this give a little something back to the community.

Whats on this week!

This Thursday sees Roots Manuva take the stage at Glasgow's the Arches as he tours his fifth studio album 4everevolution, and I for one am pretty excited.

Roots manuva isn't your typical British Rapper as his blend of hip hop with reggae, dub, electronica and even gospel and lyrics about the soul really make his sound stand out.

This may be down to him growing up in East London around the original soundsytem culture and having a father who was a preacher, which he claims not only influences his music but the way in which he lives his life.

His 2001 release "Run Come Save Me" gained him a Mercury Music Prize nomination and featured the classic "Witness" (voted the greatest UK hip hop tune of all time by readers of Hip Hop connection. His influence is said to have opened the doors for future British atalent such as Dizee Rascal and the streets.

He will be touring his latest album which is said to be his most accomplished and well crafted to date. He is a legend and a must see for all music fans, not just grime heads. Get your tickets here!

Hottie of The Week - Cassie Ventura

This week we are showing love for the one and only Cassie Ventura. She's had a place in my heart for now and for ever more after she released her first single Me and You in 2006 (the song was a belter an all).

With a new album to be dropping sometime in early 2012 on Bad Boy Records we can expect to see a lot more of her this year, I don't think anyone will be complaining. Here's a teaser for her next video King Of Hearts -

And its not just us that love her either in 2010, London bass hub Local Action released a free remix album of Cassie's work by artists who were inspired by and adored her such as Lunice, Jacques Greene and Brackles plus many more.

As well as this we also saw a collaboration with Diamond Supply Co. x Cassie X Estevan Oriol which consisted of four tees in two different colourways with Cassie prints on them, if you managed to get one lucky you!

Tellason Denim

Here at Fat Buddha we are very excited about 2012 for a whole host of reasons. Firstly we have a bunch of exciting new brands brands that will be coming to you lucky people in store and online over the next year. The latest addition being Tellason Denim.

Tellason is a San Francisco based denim collection launched by Tony Patella and long term business partner Pete Searson, the name comes from both their second names put together "Tella - Son", giving a story behind the name is something they found important.

The company have an ethos of respect and a passion for qualirty and integrity of distribution. These factors make Tellason stand out as every detail from fabric to the way they are sewed is treated with equal importance, making them that little bit special.

For example the fabric used to create the denims is from Cone Mills' White Oak plant in Greensboro, known for providing the denim industry with some of the highest quality denim since the 1700's, which is then cut and sewn in native San Francisco. Then every finished pair is examined by hand, thats what I call attention to detail.

This is a really nice collection, it still maintains the traditional Carhartt workwear influence however they manage to bridge the gap between fashion and utility wear with the use of American heritage combined with more street inspired details.

This collection has a bigger focus on the "Work In Progress" name which helps it differentiate it from the original US Carhartt workwear line. While still maintaining the high quality which we have grown to expect from Carhartt.

Friday 13th

Oooooh you may not have noticed but today is the dreaded Friday 13th. For all of you out there that are full of superstition this is considered the unluckiest day of the year! But where does this mad theory come from?

According to numerology the number 13 is believed unlucky because the number twelve is considered the number of completeness due to 12 hours in the day, 12 months in a year etc so the number 13 seems pretty quite irregular.

Friday has long been considered unlucky as according to christian scripture Jesus was hung on a Friday. There is also a link to the number 13 from christianity being that there was13 people at the last supper and Judas was the 13th to arrive.

Some believe that it is down to Thomas L Lawson's popular book "Friday, the thirteenth" where a broker takes uses people fear of the superstition to create a wall street panic. And who can forget the slasher movies from the 90's of the same name, although they probably gave people a reason to laugh about it rahter than fear it.

Watch out for those banana skins!

I personally think people don't need a reason for the roots of the superstition and just fear it for its own sake. For those of you who are feeling a bit unlucky pop into Fat Buddha or check out our online store and we're sure we'll change your luck around!

In store and online at Fat Buddha we have EDWIN. EDWIN is a Japanese brand known primarily for its denims. established 1947 by founder Mr Tsunemi who was tired of Japans inferior quality denim to its American counterpart.

This strong passion for denim drove Mr Tsunemi to create his own denims with better fits, washes and all round higher quality. This mentality for quality, craftmanship and innovation have been carried to become an ethos for the EDWIN brand.

From then on they went from strength to strenght creating the first 'old wash' denim, inventing stonewash and influencing every denim company in existence today.

For any of us lucky enough to get some decent leather shoes or boots, be it Fracap or Loake will want to keep them in pretty good nick, you need a Leather Care Product. If you have invested £170 upwards in some good shoes you don't want them to be scuffed or looking shoddy.

As a 40th birthday present, my sis treated me to a pair of Loake shoes, £185 a pair it wasn't a throwaway present, ive not worn them yet because i want to treat them to make them last, what i needed was some good Leather Care Product, and as luck would have it i came across a great little site specialising in the afore mentioned Leather Care Products, called Norton Leather Care, i gave them a call and 'Big Al' talked me through what i needed to keep my shoes in tip-top shape.

You wouldn't think there was that much to leather care but there are some real heritage brands here, companies like Angelus, Colinol, Bisheys, Safir that only make leather care stuff, these guys know their stuff and if you happen to be lucky enough to get some new shoes keep them in good nick

All Gone Streetwear Book 2011

As a street culture store we here at Fat Buddha are very excited about the launch of All Gone 2011. All Gone is a series of books that are released every year to celebrate the best of street culture from that year.

All Gone 2011

The books are compiled by fashion consultant agency La MJC and showcase the coolest streetwear releases and must have products of 2011. For more info on La MJC Check out Michael from La MJC's blog here its always pretty interesting.

Previous All Gone Books

The 6th edition of the book will be released in limited quantities on the 21st January and for the first time comes in two limited edition leopard print covers. The leopard print acting as a symbol for fashion in 2011.

Although we will not be stocking the book we do believe we'll have some of the must haves mentioned in our Glasgow store, or online at Fat Buddha. Also check out similar books in our excellent collection here.

Nike Air Force 1

It's been a while, but Nike's all time classic piece of footwear the Air Force 1 makes a welcome appearence back at Fat Buddha Store. The Air Force 1 was first produced in 1982 and by the following year had been discontinued. It went on to be released again in 1986 with the modern italic Nike logo with the trademark Swoosh on the bottom and on the back of the shoe. Little has changed to the Air Force 1 since its creation in 1982, although the original stitching on the side panels is no longer present in modern versions of the shoe. The Air Force 1 has seen over 1700 different colouways and variations since it's creation, and still remains one of Nike's most popular sneakers.

Available in the Low version top and in the Mid version above, both in the timeless White on White colourway. Like an old friend coming home, it's great to have the Air Force 1 back at Fat Buddha Store. Available instore and online now here.

Alessandro 'Zuek' Simonetti

New York based photographer Alessandro 'Zuek' Simonetti has always been one of our favorite photographers over here at Fat Buddha Store. Alessandro grew up parallel to the urban street culture of the the 1990's and his images show a great understanding of this. Originally from Italy, he developed his own photographic style reflecting his deep interest in young niche cultures.

Alessandro has gone on to collaborate with one of our favourite brands Carhartt and also other brands such as Evisu, Diesel, Redbull, Zoo York and many more. His work has been published by international magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, Lodown, Arkitip and Theme and continues to grow. Some of the great shot's below show his ability to capture great images and show his understanding of the subjects and surrounding's that he's involved in.

As it's name suggests the Air Max 90 was realeased in 1990 featuring a large visible air bubble on the sole unit and Airmax branding on the side shell. New Year, Last year wasn't so shabby.

Hey,

Well thanks for sticking by us for another year, a year in which we moved to new premises (everyone agrees much bigger and much better), we launched our sister site www.iconsume.co.uk.So, on that side of things a fairly fruitful year, we have grown up a bit acquired an older customer whilst still managing to keep our current customer.

February will see our first party night in store, Carhartt are launching it and after that it will be another branded party, with give-aways, ltd edtn product, music, discount & beers.

March time will see a re-branding exercise, new logo, re-vamped site, and a few colabs in the offing, the first one will be announced next month.
New brands we added this year are below, it wasn't until i started to list them all that i realised how much we have grown in only a year, what a difference a year makes

Lomo Fisheye Camera

With Christmas fast approaching the need to find that gift for someone special: a friend, family member, or whoever it may be is becoming more and more of a challenge. With even less days on your advent calender left to spend shopping, finding that present can be difficult. Luckily we here at Fat Buddha have plenty of gifts, gadgets, toys and more to help you make a decision. One item we stock in particular can be suited for just about everyone: the Lomography Fisheye.

This cute and compact little companion is easy to use, comes in a variety of colours, can be used with just about every 35mm film, and is also very robust (my own camera has survived 3 festivals so far).
The camera itself is very easy to use, so its perfect for all ages. Just simply load the film, turn the crank wheel and shoot! The camera has a built in flash so there is no need to worry about a lack of light in your photos, and thanks to the cameras fisheye lens (hence the name) it is able to catch 180 degrees of your field of vision to ensure you never miss a moment, plus just about anything you snap looks cool.

This camera was given to me as an added gift last Christmas and I struggle to think of anything that could top it for its value. And just to give you a little taster of what can be done with the camera, here are some photos taken by yours truly.

With the warm days a thing of dreams and those cold cold nights drawing closer by the day we thought we'd try bring some heat with 3 new Vans styles, which landed in the past week.

The 106 Moc in Black is part of the Vans California range which uses premium materials and has a more refined style - these will look perfect on a Christmas night out with some jeans and a shirt. They have a vulcanized sole, like the other 106's, but are finished with contrast metal eyelets.

With christmas approaching what better way is there to begin the festive season than with some of Glasgows finest musical talent, being held at the Studio Warehouse Glasgow (SWG3) tonight features live music from Glasgow based producer Rustie, Simply Richard from Glasgows own Numbers, Nightwave, and more. This night is not only about music however, with artist Margot Bowman working with the likes of topshop to cater to the aesthetic side of things with some new artwork made for the party.

The 42 year old international manager was found dead in his home early this morning, full details have yet to be disclosed surrounding this tragic matter however, it looks like he may have taken his own life.

Growing up the English team I followed was Newcastle United and along with great players such as David Ginola, Faustino Asprilla before him Gary Speed became a hero to many a Geordie. Always a willing runner and battler it was his technique and vision that made him special.

He is still the most capped outfield player for the Welsh National Team and captained his country on many occasions. More recently as the boss of the Welsh National Team he had a great run of results and was seemingly turning the corner with the Nation and producing a team full of very talented and gifted youngsters as well as a few experienced pro's.

The footballing world and the world in general has today lost a great man.

My thoughts and those of undoubtedly many others are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Huf X Haze

Online soon we have the HUF collaboration with New York City graffiti legend and designer Eric HAZE, which features a series of three fresh t-shirts and a snapback featuring HAZE's signature lettering style.

HUF is the creation of Professional Skateboarder, Keith Hufnagel who in 2002 decided to open up a shop that brought the types of skateboard lifestyle apparel and footwear that he was used to in his native NYC to San Francisco where he was living at the time. Over the years HUF evolved from shop to brand and is now a highly respected skateboard brand.

Eric Haze is a well known graff artist and designer from New York City. During his early days as a writer in the 1970's he went under the name "HAZE" and quickly gained notoriety on the streets and subways of NYC for his unique hand style and trademark letter forms.

He was also responsible designing the logo for public enemy and his handwritten text for for the Beastie Boys "Check Your head" album cover is porobably one of the most imitated handwriting styles to this day. He went on to open his own design studio, as well as launch his own clothing and design line.

The End - Returns

The End was a legendary set of Fanzines from the 80's, it is now published in one mammoth book.

It was the first terrace fanzine, the godfather of the football fanzines but still dressed in punk's cut and paste graphics. We're re-issuing them in one volume.

Jesus this has taken a long time. 20 years in fact. If you’ve never seen The End now’s your chance to find out about a unique chapter in British publishing history. Long before casual was ever really recognised as a youth cult a group of Liverpudlians created a home-made fanzine capturing life on the streets of their city, the local music and political scenes, and not forgetting the terraces. It was very funny, very roughly laid out and very popular. Its greatest champion was John Peel who would regularly name check the magazine on his Radio One show and also invited the editors onto national television to discuss their cult fanzine.

Hardcore fans of The End have been badgering the former editors to bring out a best of for decades. Now Sabotage Times and adidas have come together to help them finally produce one volume with every issue in it. The book will include every Ins and Outs list, every music interview, every letters page, every one of the classic End illustrations and interviews with Billy Bragg and The Clash amongst many others. In addition to all 20 issues there’ll also be a new Ins & Outs list, the memories of the three editors, and various other articles from contributors and admirers. This week we’ll be putting up a gallery of images from the magazine but this is the first opportunity to buy the book.

It was Benny Golds' birthday recently. I don't know if you know this, but every year he gets a new skate deck and writes the number of years he has been skating on the grip tape! It has become something of a tradition and no doubt we will soon see a photo and blog from Benny himself with his new setup!

We are doing something new with our Benny Gold stock, as the headline of the blog suggests we are moving the stock to our new location in the St. Enoch Centre in Glasgow. So if your looking for anything from the website then you'll have to get yourself over there.

As always we'll be keeping all our stock available on the website so that if unfortunately you don't live in Glasgow (or if you do and are indeed just too lazy to shop) then you'll still be able to order it directly from us!

The Benny Gold brand was a concept created by a graphic designer, jaded of working in the graphics industry for the major corporations. He felt that his creative passion was being quashed and so he set out to re-discover the "Gold" inside. Thus his brand, Benny Gold was engineered with the idea that people recognise the soul they have inside of them. These ideas and emotions are what drives people onwards and preserves their sense of identity and individualism.

Swedish brand Happy Socks bring their colurful and fun footwear to Fat Buddha Store. Launched in spring 2008 with a vision to spread happiness by turning an everyday essential into a colourful design piece. A rigid standard of ultimate quality, craftsmanship, and creativity. A philosophy brought to perfection by the Happy Socks collective of creators, most recently spotted in a 400-year-old shrieking red cottage among the cherry trees and berry bushes in a park located in the midst of Stockholm.

The word ‘socks’ is derived form loose-fitting slippers, called soccus in Latin, worn by Roman comic actors. The earliest sock models were made from animal skins wrapped around the foot and tied at the ankles. The Ancient Greeks wore socks of matted animal hair for warmth. The Romans also wrapped their feet with leather or woven fabrics. In the 5th century, the pious people of Europe wore socks called puttees as a symbol of purity. 500 years later, socks became a symbol of wealth among the nobility. The modern sock is either knitted or woven. They are designed to reduce resistance between the foot and footwear, protect footwear, provide comfort, be fashionable, and keep the feet warm. Yes the 5th of the November is upon us, or Bonfire/ Guy Fawkes Night as it's now more commonly known to us Brits.

Guy Fawkes Night originates from the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed conspiracy by a group of provincial English Catholics to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England and replace him with a Catholic head of state. Mr Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

The story of Guy fawkes was also part basis for the celebrated comic book V For Vendetta, by Alan Moore. V For Vendetta is a ten-issue comic book series, depicting a near-future Britain after a nuclear war and a tells the tale of an anarchist named V who dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask begins an edetermined to murder his former captors, bring down the government, and convince the people to rule themselves.

Nike - Toki ND - Golden Hops/Birch

We have just received a new colourway of the Nike Toki in store and now online! its called Golden Hops/Birch.

The Toki comes with a suede upper with tonal laces. As you can see there is the classic swoosh logo on the side as well as a black accent on the tongue, it also has heel and midsole trim branding.

2011 has been a great year for Nike, they've released some insane collabs and had a decent go at re-issuing some absolute classics.

Inspired by some old-shool models, the Hachi, is an all new shoe from Nike. Linking together a modern profile with an vintage mystique, don;'t be fooled this shoe is definately for the streets.

Combining suede and leather uppers for a premium fit, the shoe has a Perforated Swoosh and rubber cupsole for comfort and cushioning, and a rubber outsole with herringbone pattern for traction and durability.

The Nike Hachi is available now instore and online in Black and Navy colourways.

The Hundreds - Johnson Midtop

We love The Hundreds here at Fat Buddha, as you all know we stock everything from t-shirts to their skate decks. We also had a range of sneakers from the guys, however we are now down to our final trainer, The Johnson Midtop in Black/Blue.The attention to detail and all around design of these shoes makes them not only very aesthetically pleasing but highly practical also.

Now in its seventh version, features a suede upper, with contrasting laces and contrasting metal eyelets and eye-catching splatter printed midsoles. They've got a logo label at the top of the lightly foam-padded tongues, and the collar openings are also padded for comfort. The midsoles feature a The Hundreds logo badge at the heel and a Jags pattern underneath. They also feature soft EVA insoles with half-length latex insoles for heel cushioning comfort, and vulcanized soles with the Jags motif.
